All The December Things!

Happy December!

Happy last month of 2018, happy month filled with celebration & twinkle lights, happy birthday month to me!!!!

My Decembers are notoriously BUSY. I remember my post in this blog from 2 years ago and my December plans were a hot mess. I was trying to cram sooo much into one month! Well, this year is actually pretty similar! Let's first take a look back at my November goals to see how I did, and then journey down the path of the craziest month of the year!

November Goals:
1. Write poetry. I haven't been writing a lot of poetry, but I sure have been writing a lot besides that!
2. Take grad school steps. I submitted my application to my first school last night!!!
3. Make fun plans. SO MANY! Four friends are coming to visit me today (we're doing SantaCon Boston!), and I'm having a pajama party at my friend's house for my birthday!
4. Meal prep. I kinda did this, but because of Thanksgiving leftovers I have been HEAVILY putting off grocery shopping (also to save $), soooo this one was kind of a fail this month.
5. Contribute to family dinners. Also a fail! Thanksgiving snuck up on me and I didn't end up having time to buy ingredients!
6. Move that body. I had one AMAZING week of workouts and then I fell off after Thanksgiving! But I know I can do it now, I just need to stick to the schedule I made myself.
7. Be grateful! Of course! So grateful for the holidays, family, and friends. And of course, Cosmo.

Now time for .....

This December is another crazy month, so I'm breaking it down by weeks again, just like I did all those years ago!

Week 1: December 1st to 8th
  • SanataCon Boston with my CT friends is December 1st! Be a great hostess, clean the house, get appetizers & alcohol.
  • December 7th is my friend Leora's birthday! Go out to drinks with her!
  • December 8th is Courtney's housewarming party/Christmas party in CT! Remember to bring a nice bottle of wine and Yankee swap gift!

Week 2: December 9th to 15th
  • Start buying Christmas presents on Amazon before it's too late!
  • This is the only weekend I don't have plans, so relax & restore for the rest of the month!

Week 3: December 16th to 22nd
  • My birthday week!!!!!
  • Out for drinks with friends on the 19th to celebrate my unfortunate aging!
  • Bake cookies for the staff cookie swap on the 20th
  • Get an ugly Christmas sweater and Yankee swap gift for the staff holiday party on the 20th
  • Pajama party with my friends in CT on either the 19th or the 20th (because nothing says "I'm elderly" like asking your friends to throw you a pajama party so you don't have to go outside in the cold!)

Week 4: December 22nd to 31st
  • Enjoy Christmas and my Christmas vacation from work to the FULLEST!
  • Read a ton of good books
  • Sleep in & relax
  • Write write write!
  • Spend New Year's Eve with my friends (as opposed to last year when I didn't do anything for some reason and was extremely bitter about it) !!!

Overarching Goals for December:
- Don't spend money unless I absolutely need to!
- Get back into my weekly workout habit!
- Work on consistency in creativity (art, drawing, writing, blogging)
- Stay on top of bills!
- Be present & enjoy the magic of this season!

October Recap & November Goals

Happy November!

This is the part of the month where I take a look at how I did in October, and make a beautiful roadmap of plans for the current month. Here were my October goals:

1. Write, write, write.  - Yes, I did! I could of course do more, but I got a start on generating some ideas for written projects. And of course, I blogged!
2. Get on the grad school grind. - I emailed two of my college professors asking for recommendation letters and they said of course!
3. Stick to the TIU 30 Day Challenge! - Lololol, this did not happen.
4. Purge my apartment and prep guest bedroom in CT.  - I got rid of so much shit in my apartment, spent an entire day cleaning out my closet, and made my guest bedroom in CT very live-able for when I go home to visit my parents. Yay!

Novembers goals & hopes & dreams:

1. Write that poetry. I brainstormed & had great ideas, now I need to execute the ideas.

2. Take those grad school steps. I literally have to apply to one school before Dec. 1st, and I work best under pressure so now is the time to get. it. done.

3. Plan those fun events. I want to have a Christmas party at my apartment with my friends from MA & CT, so I need to plan that! I also need to plan what I'm doing for my birthday this year because it sneaks up on me so quickly.

4. Prep that healthy food. Meal-prepping is the bane of my existence because I hate cooking, so this will probably be a goal every single month.

5. Contribute to those family dinners. I want to bring something cute & vegan to Thanksgiving dinner this year.

6. Move that body. I started a little project called [move]mber on my dance instagram account where I post a video of myself dancing every day this month! I want to make sure I stay committed to this.

7. Thank those lucky stars! Being grateful & consistently writing down the things I'm thankful for subconsciously puts me into a more peaceful, present mood. I don't even realize it until I think back on when I was doing this consistently and then I'm like, oh... those were the good 'ol days.

I can't wait to read your goals & see how much we've accomplished by the end of the month!

October Goals.

Ahhhhh, a beautiful new month. Here are my October goals!

1. Write, write write.
I want to stay committed to blogging regularly, again, to hold myself accountable and to keep reminding myself of my goals. The more I see them, the more likely I am to stick to them! I also want to try writing different styles that I used to love: poetry, prose, short form fiction. I am such a perfectionist but writing needs to become a fun, no pressure activity for me again.

2. Get on the grad school grind.
This month I need to reach out to admissions counselors, professors for recommendation letters, research admissions requirements, make sure I have those requirements, and begin filling out applications and writing personal statements. Ugh, it's so overwhelming! But I applied to grad school once, so I know I can do it again (lol)!

3. Stick to TIU 30 Day Challenge!
My friend, Courtney, and I are doing this challenge with Tone It Up. I won't be following the meal plan 100% because I have another meals that have been working for me (but I am on board with lean, clean, and green meals.. also lots of potatoes because #ComfortFood), but I will be doing either a workout class at my local gym OR the TIU daily moves every damn day.

4. Purge my apartment & prep guest bedroom in CT.
I don't know why it's so difficult for me to tackle minor home projects like cleaning out the bathroom cabinets. I had grand plans to do just that this past weekend. But alas, motivation could not find me. But! I have high hopes this month of finally getting rid of the VAST amounts of random items that have collected in this apartment in the past year. When I do finally move out of the city it will be so much easier if I'm not rummaging through fifteen different hair products while trying to pack. That said, there is a chance that sometime in the near future I may have to move back in with my parents. That bedroom has turned into my parents personal storage area, so I'm hoping to remedy that when I go home for Columbus Day weekend.

Here's to a new month, all the apples & pumpkin, and tangible goals.

Roadmap for 2017 + My 24th Year

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me!!!
Today, I am 24. I am taking the day off from work, sleeping in a bit, making myself a delicious breakfast, going to the gym, getting a massage, and teaching a dance class. Woo!

Since my birthday is so close to NYE, I'm going to combine my goals/bucket list/resolutions for the new year with my ambitions for my 24th year of life. All smashed together into one big shmorgasborg of a shit ton of things I want to get done in 2017.

2016 was a failed year. I hate to be dramatic, but it feels that way in retrospect. I did accomplish some things, try out some new stuff, and see some new places. But all in all, I felt unbelievable stagnant. I like to keep things positive, but it is what it is.

ON TO THE NEXT ONE.

The mottos:

The poetic approach:
The same time will go by and where will you be?
yearning for more or finally free...

Here is a list all the non-time-sensitive things I want to accomplish, try, fail at, see, do, experience, and test out in the next 365 days of approaching closer and closer to my quarter life crisis. I may write these down on a giant poster board and hang them in my room, but there's no precise time table for getting these done, I just want to eventually (this year!)

1. Do a polar plunge.
2. Participate in a Whole 30 eating plan.
3. Attend a gay pride event.
4. Train for and complete a 10k.
5. Have someone perform Reiki on me.
6. Take a professional dance class.
7. Go hiking in Vermont.
8. Take an aerial Yoga class.
9. Distribute hot cocoa and coffee to crossing guards in the winter.
10. Go to an outdoor concert (I didn't go to a single one in 2017!)

YEAR LONG, ON-GOING GOALS:

  • Take a short video every day of the year, to create a 365 second long 1SE video.
  • Dance once a week and record myself improvising to all of my favorite songs. Compile the video. Witness the growth.
  • Get out of cc debt (or as close as possible).
  • Stretching and yoga, to me, is the truest form of self-care. Implement as often as possible.
  • Eat clean clean and cleaner still. You can do it, biotch.
  • Take deeper freakin' breaths. Pause before speaking. Radiate the light you know is inside of you, daily.

GOALS SPECIFIC TO MONTHS:

January - apply to freakin' grad school.

February - surprise L with a Valentine's Day homemade meal or sappy present because I am a weak, weak person.

March - go to a St. Paddy's Day parade, visit Aunt Natalie in Atlanta and take a day trip to Savannah, GA!

April - start training for a 10K, hopefully decide where I am going to grad school!!!

May - start process of apartment hunting.

June - complete a 10K.

July - go to a super fun 4th of July event, with fireworks and sparklers!

August - decide where I am going to be living for the next indeterminate number of years, move there, either travel internationally or compete an intensive 2-week yoga teacher training course in Costa Rica or somewhere equally unbelievable.

September - start grad school (!!!!)

October - celebrate Halloween either Boston-style or Pumpkin Fest-style in Keene, NH. All depends on where I decide for grad school.

November - Go home for Thanksgiving and write down at least one thing I'm grateful for each day for the whole month.

December - Bake 1,000 Christmas cookies, volunteer my time at a shelter of some kind, see the Rockette's Christmas Spectacular.

This is 100x more intense year planning than what I did in 2016 so I'm hoping and praying that this year goes according to plan. Of course, with a little wiggle room for spontaneity :)

Cheers to a new year, new beginnings, new chances, and 365 opportunities to make it count.

All The December Things

Another month, GONE.

I did a pretty good job in November of living my mantras. I was spontaneous, I continued writing in this blog for numero uno (me, obviously, ahah), I did not contribute to Thanksgiving dinner but then again I was banned from the kitchen by crazy female relatives, I did start texting my long distance friends more, I didn't do Yoga but I downloaded some Yoga apps and meditated so... success! Onto the next month (and the last... wtf)

December is the last month I have to get it together for 2016. How am I supposed to fit all of this into 31 short days??!?! I feel like a mad woman. I've drafted several calendars for the month of December already, trying to figure out if I can see a light show, bake several dozen batches of cookies, finish Christmas shopping, and run a 5k... all in one day.

Help. Send help.

The end of a year has never felt so frantic and short for me. Yes, I want to squeeze it ALL IN. Can I? I dunno. I have four weekends to try and do what feels like seven million different things.

So because this month is so wild and crazy I've literally settled on breaking it down into weeks 1 through 4. I wish this was a happy happy crunchy granola goals post like I've been doing, but we JUST DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT THIS MONTH. '

Week 1 (12/1-12/4)

  • get my festive manicure on Friday afternoon
  • visit The Christmas House Friday night (a house that's been featured on Christmas Wars and shows like that)
  • decorate EVERYTHING
  • finish buying Christmas presents (cuz it's pay day tomorrow, heyyy!)
  • go to my dance studio's holiday performance Saturday evening
  • go to L's friends' Friendsgiving Saturday evening (if time permits)
  • get a Christmas tree Sunday afternoon
  • work on grad school applications

Week 2 (12/5-12/11)

  • use my free facial gift certificate before it expires on the 11th
  • go to a festival of lights on Friday evening
  • have a wine night with coworker friends on Friday evening (not sure if I can do both ^^, lolz)
  • go to Santa Con in Boston on Saturday
  • have my friend give me a tour of her campus in Cambridge on Sunday
  • work on grad school applications

Week 3 (12/12-12/18)

  • bake Christmas cookies... at some point
  • see the Cirque Du Soleil Holiday Show with my dance studio Saturday night
  • go to NYC for a day trip and walk around in awe and wonder on Sunday
  • work on grad school applications

Week 4 (12/19-12/31)

  • celebrate my birthday in true 24 year old fashion... with tequila shots and cheese quesadillas on Monday night into Tuesday
  • get a massage on Tuesday, my actual day of birth
  • wrap up the Christmas presents!
  • have a wonderful Christmas with my fam, then with L's fam in Massachusetts
  • do SOMETHING AWESOME for NYE (I'm begging you, any ideas? I still don't know!
  • APPLY TO GRAD SCHOOL.

I apologize that this was likely the most hectic and stressful goals post you've ever read.
I'm laughing maniacly just looking at it :')

I feel frantic and like I need to pour some Bailey's into my coffee asap, so excuse me while I go try and make a thousand paper snowflakes while online shopping while listening to Yuletide carols while watching Elf while scheduling my facial.

xoxo

All The November Things

Goodbye October, hello November.

I'm so happy with my mantras from October. I'm happy that I never felt stressed to accomplish any random goals, yet I feel like I accomplished so much. I'm happy that I do find myself feeling a little less tense, a little more free, and a lot more present. Now onto the next one.

Cozy, comfy November.
Filled with family, friends, food, and desperately trying to not gain twenty pounds.

Last November was a tough one. L's grandma passed away and we attended the services in New York together. He's a very sensitive person and even though we had only been dating for about two months, I really felt that I needed to be there for him. Shortly after that, we got into a car accident where both of our cars were totaled - thank goodness we were okay - but I spent almost a full day in the hospital with a fractured sternum and seriously bruised knee. Our relationship did not start off easy, which bonded us together very strongly.

But yes, last November was a tough one.

Continuing along last months' format, here are my 10 things for November. Not quite goals, not quite mantras, but something perfectly in-between.

1. Find some balance // Balance in everything. Sleep time vs. social life time. Healthy eating vs. happy indulging. Family time vs. friend time.

2. Strengthen friendships // I just want to reach out to people more, be it through a phone call or just an Instagram comment. Hi friend, I miss you, I'm sad we live miles apart, we should reconnect soon! Instead of sending them drunk snapchats telling them I miss at 6pm on a Friday.

3. Stay healthy, stay motivated, stay striving.

4. Be cozy, warm, and snuggly.

5. Be outgoing, adventurous, and spontaneous.

6. Contribute to family Thanksgiving dinner // I don't care if it's only buying the pre-made dinner rolls, I'm 23 years old and it's about time I stop looking like a low life and actually contribute to the holiday meals!

7. Continue to write in this blog for me // I've decided that this blog isn't about ads, comments, promoting, or traffic. I'm not that person. I'm the person writing about my life, mostly for me, but for anyone else who wants to dive in. But you'll never find me writing a post called "Top 10 Ways to Gain Guest Traffic this Holiday Season!" It'll be more like "My Aunt Got Drunk and Spilled Cranberry Sauce on Our Beagle". Just keeping it real here.

8. Speak my mind // Enough of the shy, timid girl that I morph into sometimes. I'm not even sure where she came from. But she's not invited to this party anymore.

9. Be mindful and live in the present moment, but still try and capture memories to look back on // Sometimes I'm so into living in the present that I don't take any pictures, and then I forget that those moments even existed.

10. Try try try to take a couple of Yoga classes // Good for my body, great for my mind.

Let's dive right into November, in all of it's golden colored, turkey flavored, gravy covered goodness.

A Big Change, A Subtle Shift

October, man. We are in you.

This is one of my favorite months. Halloween has always been a favorite holiday of mine - I was quite a spooky kid. Princess costumes were boring in my book - I was a witch about six years in a row and then dabbled in fake plastic vampire teeth and synthetic costume shop blood.

If I was going to be a princess it had better have the word "zombie" in front!

I was a huge fan of dress-up too. I had a dress-up bin that was probably the largest storage container my parents could find. Wigs, old dance costumes, capes, fairy princess wands, Cinderella slippers, and body glitter piled on top of each other would topple out onto the carpet whenever a friend came over and it was time to prepare a fashion show for our parents.

One of my goals (but we aren't calling them goals) for October is to stop taking myself so seriously. A small subset of that goal is to change up my appearance in some way, just for fun, just because I'm young and I can still get away with it.

I'm 23 years old and I've never pierced anything besides my single pierced ears, never got a tattoo, haven't really had a proper haircut in maybe six years, never dyed my hair a crazy color (unless kool-aid red, BY ACCIDENT, in middle school counts).

I think I'm boring. And I don't like that at all.

There's an edgy little firecracker inside me but I'm so scared for some reason of expressing myself outwardly. I'm soooooo sick of it!

I am t w e n t y  t h r e e  y e a r s  o l d.

To be fair, I strongly believe women have the freedom to drastically change up their appearance at any stage of their life. If you're 40 and you suddenly want to get your eyebrow pierced, GO FOR IT. I just feel like I'm the youngest I'm ever going to be, and why not just do something now. If not now, when.

So I have an appointment to get my hair done this Friday, or maybe next Friday, and this is what I'm thinking.

1. purple on the tips?  2. this darker rose color?
3. i honestly think this is fucking gorgeous 4. so subtle, but so cute.

Which one do you like the best?
I hope my boyfriend's sister, who does my color, doesn't want to kill me for wanting to do this to my hair. We worked really hard on making a super blended balayage for like, the past four months... whoops! Sorry Lucy, hehe.

September Recap + October Goals!

It seems like September went by with the blink of an eye, which also seems to be the theme of this entire year. I'm going to do a round-up of my September goals, then explain why I'm doing October a little bit differently.

SEPTEMBER GOALS

01) Make & use toothpaste and make-up wipes from natural ingredients. -- nope.

02) Make "nice cream" out of bananas and fun flavors! -- nope.

03) Take some pretty photos for the blog/have new headshots taken for dance. -- nope.

04) Read one book for pleasure and one book for knowledge.
I don't know why I'm having issues reading any books for knowledge! But I'm almost finished with He Will Be My Ruin, and I started Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone. Just because it's my own little random tradition to re-read the entire series every couple of years and it really puts me in the fall/winter spirit.

05) Actually start grad school application process (scary!)
I've spoken with two DMT's so far and I think it's officially time to give up the OT path I've plowed for myself the past couple of years. I'm not even going to bring myself to think about how much money I wasted on Anatomy classes... life is moving on. The DMT's I've talked to are so interesting and the programs sound so inspiring. It really is a career where it's all about how you market yourself and what you make of it. I'm getting coffee with another DMT this weekend, so we'll see what advice she can give me for my application process. Which I definitely need to physically start, soon.

06) Meditate at least twice a week.
My meditation practice wasn't formal and it wasn't scheduled. But what I have been doing is making a conscious effort to take deep breaths more consistently throughout the day. I can tell the difference when I've been breathing shallowly for a long time. There are thousands of studies that show how deep breathing can drastically improve your overall health.

07) Save $400 and put it directly into a travel fund.
No. I didn't accomplish this goal at all. But what I did accomplish is downloading the Qapital app, featured in my monthly favorites, which saves all my money for me. This is the kind of savings account that I need. Something visual, and something that gives me the option of actively or passively saving money towards a variety of goals.

08) Try a Bikram Yoga class.
Yes, I did accomplish this, yes it was really really really fucking sweaty. I also forgot a water bottle, so I almost died of dehydration. Would I do it again? Probably, because I love sweating.

I'm not doing goals for October. I just don't feel like it.
Sometimes I think I make this arbitrary list of goals, just to give myself random things to get done. They're all things that I want to do, but it just doesn't feel natural. Maybe it's because they're written down so formally?

I'm working really, really hard towards finding myself as a 23 year old woman in this world. I feel like I've aged 30 years in 2016. I'm frustrated that I've become a person who takes myself and my life so seriously. I am so young! What is wrong with me??

So instead of a random list of goals for October, I have a list of 10 October things. Maybe mantras is a better word. But here they are.

OCTOBER THINGS

01) Actively stop myself anytime I'm afraid to do something. Take a deep breath. Do it anyways.
02) Be happy, loud, and free.
03) Change up my appearance in some dramatic way. Just because I'm young and I can get away with it still.
04) Stop taking myself and my life so seriously.
05) Be okay with where I'm at, compared with everyone else. aka, stop comparing myself to everyone else.
06) Continue my wonderful, life-changing health journey. Bring even more naturalness into my life (beauty, skincare, etc.)
07) Enjoy every single second of Halloween-themed everything. Decorate a pumpkin, make ghosts out of tissue paper, make spooky dance playlists, DIY a dope costume. Feel like a kid again!
08) Laugh my way through a corn maze or a pumpkin patch.
09) Stay organized - but find spontaneity again in my life.
10) Say "yes" to all fun things. Yes yes yes.

What are you working towards, not just this month... but in your life?
Because life is too short to only put the serious stuff on the to-do list... and when you think about it, what's really more important than your happiness in your life?

Not much, man.

HAPPY OCTOBER.

august recap & september goals!

This year is really the first year that I haven't been pained by that horrible sensation of not going back to school. In fact, I've barely even noticed. I taught my last session of summer dance classes last night and it was my kids' first day back to school. They looked exhausted!

It makes me scratch my head and wonder how I even did that. Seven hours of school (in honors classes, mind you), five days a week, all while taking up to eight dance classes a week AND show choir rehearsals?? I was either a super hero or a kid with lots and lots of energy. It makes me admire my dance students a lot more - they have so much going on, yet they still want to be present in my class. I love those kids.

Onto a new month, with some new goals! But first let's see how I did on last months goals.

1. Figure out what I want to go to grad school for and make a definitive list of schools I will be applying for.
I got in contact with an old college professor who thinks it's "an excellent idea" to apply to both OT and DMT programs and see where the cards fall once I'm accepted anywhere. So that's the plan, man!

2. Contact college professors for recommendation letters. Done, just have to e-mail one more.

3. Plan out each dance class before walking into the studio
Major win for this one. I loved feeling so prepared and having notes to look down at.

4. Read at least 2 books for pleasure and at least 1 book to learn something new.
I didn't finish any books but I am ALMOST done with two. Unfortunately I didn't read to learn anything... oh well! Through this, I developed a great habit of putting my phone down and reading at the very least a few pages of my books each night before bed time :)

5. Have a picnic at a winery/go wine tasting.
Ugh, I had plans to, but they fell through because of flaky friends. Fail.

6. Listen to a podcast in the car every time my drive is over 20 minutes long.
Probably the most successful goal of this month and absolutely my new favorite habit. I have a LONG and growing list of podcasts that have been tickling my fancy this month. I can't wait to do a big 'ol blog post about it!

7. Go to a butterfly sanctuary.
Literally just didn't have time!

8. Take my first barre class. Done

I did pretty well! Overall, I'm satisfied with the things and habits that I've been able to cultivate last month. Listening to podcasts during my drives has honest to goodness changed my life though. I no longer dread a long commute, I'm secretly grateful for a little traffic, and I feel like I'm expanding my mind + my thoughts, tenfold! Now here's the new stuff...

September Goals

1. Make & use toothpaste and make-up wipes from natural ingredients.
2. Make "nice cream" out of bananas and fun flavors!
3. Take some pretty photos for the blog/have new headshots taken for dance.
4. Read one book for pleasure and one book for knowledge.
5. Actually start grad school application process (scary!)
6. Meditate at least twice a week.
7. Save $400 and put it directly into a travel fund.
8. Try a Bikram Yoga class.

Apparently I'm all about trying new things this month!
Here's to a new month, a fresh start, + trying something a little different.
What are some new things you want to try in September?
What's your favorite thing you did in August?

July Recap & August Goals!

Did the month of July even happen? It's like I blinked and it was over. I think it's because of how occupied my mind was with my class. I was truly studying almost every spare minute of my day.

Butttttttttttttttttt...

IT'S OVER. And I survived. And so did my sanity. Words cannot describe how excited I am to have all this mental free time. So much time to read for pleasure. So much time to catch up on guilty pleasure reality TV (cough Big Brother cough). Also, so much time to research grad schools and figure out what I want to do with my life. Not as fun as the first two options, but super necessary.

With that said, here's a short recap of how my July goals went, as well as my new goals for August!

June Recap & July Goals!

Hello, hello little space on the internet.

I have really missed writing here. Writing is one of my all time favorite creative outlets. There is a small part of me that deeply regrets not listening to my dad and my English teacher and pursuing a Journaling degree in college. I was hardheaded - I NEEDED to major in DANCE.

I won't deny that those were the best four years of my life. I was in shape and completely in tune with my mind, body, and soul. Now, this blog is where I can turn to unleash that creativity. So despite how busy and frazzled I am with this summer class, I do miss blogging, so so much.

Anyways! I think it's time to recap my month of June and plan out my month of July. Here goes nothing.

May Recap & June Goals!

It is the first day of June. Howwwwwwww did this happen?

How To Get Out of a Major Funk

I am the Queen of Funks, I think.

That sounds so hip and jazzy, but no, I am not the Queen of FUNK (which would be fun and include a lot of shimmying and hip shakin' and saxophones). No, I am the Queen of Funks, plural.

I'm sure I'm not the only person that this happens to. Perhaps my coping and adjustment mechanisms have dwindled drastically since I graduated college. I used to be much more resilient! Deadlines didn't scare me, neither did social obligations, or downing five tequila shots before hitting the bar on a Thursday night!

But now it's so much harder for me to pull myself out of a funk.

Funks can be caused by a variety of things:

  • crappy weather that is depressing and unmotivating
  • getting sick or injured; your schedule gets all thrown off
  • having your schedule change in any way
  • getting into an argument with a loved one
  • making a mistake at your job
  • returning from a vacation (you can read about my tips on how to survive returning from a vacation in this here blog post!)
Basically, it seems as though these things all have one common factor. They all involve having your schedule change, or having a mental/emotional monkey wrench thrown into your life.

What can you do about it?
The reality of life is that you aren't always going to be able to control your circumstances. You can only react to the chaos. You can cry about not having enough money on your iTunes gift card to buy LEMONADE from the iTunes store. Or, you can transfer $17.99 from your savings account because you're living paycheck to paycheck and #priorities obviously include having Beyonce in your life.

How to drag yourself out of a funk:

1. Organize your priorities.

What are your top priorities? Saving money? Finding a new job? Just getting back into your regular work out routine? Figure out what your top 3 things are and get re-invigorated about them! These tasks shouldn't seem daunting, they should seem exciting and life-affirming. The time is going to pass anyways, so why don't you figure out exactly what you want. The first step is realizing what these things are.

2. Set a random goal that is 100% attainable.

It doesn't have to be a part of your grand plan, or any of your large and over-arching goals. But it has to be something you can definitely cross off your to-do list, and it will ideally give you a sense of pride. I've decided that I'm going sign up for and train for a 10K run! I've never even run in an organized 5K (although I am also doing one in June). But signing up for these babies holds you accountable. You have to pay to register after all! If I'm going to spend my hard earned pennies to run, I better train myself well enough so I'm not crawling on all fours through the finish line.

3. Write everything down.

Everything that I just told you? Your priorities, random goals, monthly bills, obligations, appointments, meet-ups, creative landmarks, etc etc.? Write it ALL down. I've been totally crazy with my planner situation. I bought a $75 Erin Condren planner, then stopped using it because YO, STICKERS ARE F*CKING EXPENSIVE, then bought a Moleskin and tried to bullet journal. I envy the neat freaks who live by the bullet journal, but that's honestly just too much work for me. So I'm actually going to good 'ol reliable Target TODAY to try and find a no nonsense monthly planner and some highlighters. That worked for me in college so I should've learned; if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

4. Get yourself lookin' fine.

I don't know about you, but pulling myself out of a funk is exponentially easier when I actually feel really good about myself. This starts from the inside out (see #9), but it doesn't hurt to aid this process from the outside in. Taking care of yourself externally can also trick you into caring about yourself internally, and if that is what it takes, then get yourself lookin' fine. Do a face mask. I know you have one that you haven't used in months! Do a hair mask. Literally just walk into your kitchen and slather coconut oil all over your hair. It makes a HUGE difference. Paint your nails. These things aren't hard, but damn, they can make a huge difference in my attitude and appreciation for myself. There's only one of you. Why would you not treat yourself with love and attention?! If you're as needy as I am, you should be doing this all the freakin' time.

5. Talk to your friends about it.

Your friends should be your therapists and your biggest fans. If you're in a funk, reach out to them, no matter how near or far they are. My two besties live in Boston and North Carolina and we have a group message that we are literally constantly chatting in. If I told them I was having an off day and needed some motivation/inspiration, I'd be showered with compliments involving a lot of phrases like "boss ass bitch", "slaying", and "you got dis!" I hope your friends are this awesome.

6. Get vitamin d, SOMEHOW.

This might be more of a personal thing, but if there are too many rainy days, I inevitably find myself in a funk. My therapist thinks I might get Seasonal Affective Disorder and be one of those people who just needs to live in a sunny environment. BRB, saving up to move to Florida right now! Sunlight and specifically vitamin D have been proven to have significant impacts on your mood and even brain functioning! If you're in a funk because of the weather, take it from me and try a daily vitamin D supplement or eat more foods that are rich in the D (tuna, salmon, cheese, and egg yolks to name a few. Dairy is also often fortified with the D).

7. Clean your areas.

Physical clutter = mental build ups. Those are definitely not conducive to getting yourself out of a funk. Just set some time aside to de-clutter, dust, and get rid of those random receipts, Sephora delivery boxes (oops), and dirty socks that missed the laundry basket that are just hanging around the corners of your areas.

8. Fix your relationships.

You can't move forward if something is holding you back. If an apology is due make it. Or if someone owes you one, ask for it. Clear the air because emotional clutter is just as harmful as physical clutter to your mental well-being. You might find that your time being stuck in a funk can decrease drastically if everything is going well in your interpersonal relationships. Spread kindness and forgiveness around like confetti y'all!

9. Freakin' meditate.

Feeling at peace starts from the inside out. Starting a meditation practice, even if it is only 1 minute, every other day, is better than nothing. Start small. Put your phone away, or set a timer on it for the length you'd like to be mentally ~ away ~. Listen to instrumental music, or the birds chirping outside, or nothing at all. Let your thoughts float by like clouds. Notice them, but let them pass. Getting out of a funk is about re-gaining your confidence, taking action, and feeling at peace with your path. Meditation is going to help that, in big and small ways!

If all else fails, get this shirt. If it doesn't motivate you when you rock it in your kitchen to blend up a green smoothie and drink that sh*t while job searching, meal prepping, and face masking, I don't know what will.

Good luck with getting out of your funk! Mine was caused by a week of sickness and then a week of terrible weather and I'll tell you right now, I'm going to be implementing all of these things this week!

April Fails & May Goals

I failed in April. Or maybe April failed me.

Or maybe my goals for April were just too big and grand that lil 'ol me overshot for Pluto but landed somewhere among the stars. It's not like I didn't do ANYTHING in April. I'm gonna blame my plague for making me feel like April was a bust, since it ended on such a sour note. But large goals I had for myself, I didn't even think about twice. Like coming up with a financial plan. Lolz.

My version of a financial plan at this stage in the game is checking my bank account every now and then, crying for a little while, and putting as much money as physically possible towards my car and credit card payments, all whilst trying not to spend a single penny on anything unnecessary (yet somehow managing to convince myself that I NEED to place an order at Sephora...).

It's a hard life.

I'm approaching May a little bit differently.

Instead of these vast goals that seem so difficult and out of reach to accomplish, I'm getting real specific up in this bitch.

1. Register and train for a 10K for the beginning of June.

2. Sell at least $200 worth of clothes on Poshmark.

3. Go see a dance performance.

DONE. THAT'S IT.

And that encompasses the things that are actually truly important to me right now:

Be active. Make money. Renew a passion.

Hopefully with these specific goals, and only three of them, it'll be something that I can honestly and actively stick with. I will update how this much different method goes for me, but I have all my fingers crossed!

April Goals

Andddddddd just like that we are a quarter of the way done with 2016. Is time accelerating or is that just me? That's definitely a theory that's out there right now, right? Geesh.

HELLO, APRIL.

April showers bring May flowers unfortunately looks like it's proving to be accurate the next fifteen days, according to my Weather app. Rude.

Yes, that is snow that you see on the forecast. What a sick, twisted joke.

Anywhos, ANOTHER FRESH START TO A NEW MONTH. Who's excited? * Raises hand and jumps up and down * I'm a sucker for a fresh start and a new set of goals, man. Nothing quite tickles my fancy like that 1 on the page when you flip the calendar.

Let's recap my progress on my March goals, shall we?

1. Buy a vehicle. HALLELUJAH. PRAISE. #BLESSED. I accomplished this goal this month, of purchasing my adorable little black 2012 Honda Civic EX. I love her. She has heated seats, a sunroof, a spacious tan interior, and Bluetooth. She is everything I thought that I could never possess in a car because my parents have always bought old, crappy used cars. I'm breaking the cycle.

2. Eat clean. Lol, so I did already write a post about this. But I broke 11 days in. Not bad, but certainly not good either. Also, no one told me that Easter was in March. For some bizarre reason I thought it was in April??? So this was a super unfair disadvantage, just sayin'.

3. Be active AF. This is where I start being super proud of myself. I was really into my Fitbit this month and had some incredible streaks of active minutes. I was active over 5 days of the week for three weeks in a row. Bam!

4. Get your read on. I didn't start the body book like I planned on, but I totally finished Big Little Lies and wrote a review for it here. Amazing book!

5. Be proactive. Meal plan for every day. Totally only did this for three days, lolz.

6. Out with the old. Didn't get around to this in the month of March, but it is the top of my list for this new month.

7. You are #1. I may not have gotten a massage, but I did shave, moisturize, and paint my nails more often than ever before! I also won a facial treatment in a raffle in a Zumbathon! Which brings me to.....

8. Try something new! Not only did I take my first Zumba class, I participated in a Zumbathon! It was super fun, and just exciting to try something out of my normal routine.

So overall, I'm actually extremely proud of myself for the month of March. No I didn't accomplish every single thing I set out to do, but I came pretty close! Now, onto the next one...

1. Spring cleaning! This is now at the top of the list. I'm in love with this whole obsession with minimalism that's going on. I will binge watch Youtube videos of capsule wardrobes and people cleaning out their closets. Out with the old, and good riddance!

2. Work on long term goals having to do with grad school and OT. I've already set up some dates to shadow OT's in different settings and my first one is today! I'd also like to start reviewing Anatomy chapters for my class that starts in June. Research grad schools and GRE requirements.

3. Attempt clean eating again. Break my 11 day no dessert record. Remind myself that my body is 80% diet and that I spent months trashing it with Thanksgiving food, birthday food, and Christmas holidays food.

4. Create a financial plan. Super boring I know. But I have to figure out a game plan to pay off my crippling debt and build some savings accounts to make all my dreams come true #GrandCanyonVacation.

5. Read for knowledge. Dive into The Body Book and You Are A Badass. Learn some new stuff!

6. Continue being active af. Try to hit 10,000 step goal every day. Do another Zumba class. Try a BodyPump class. Check out a new gym that has lots of class options and consider signing up. Variety is ze spice of life!

7. You are still #1. Taking care of yourself is muy importante, both to your physical and mental health. So, continue this habit, but include hair mask, flossing, even more shaving, body butter, nails and eyebrows. Oh and I'm getting my nasty grown out highlights fixed on Wednesday, so that's a thing!

Weeeeeeeee! New month, some new goals, and some old. Let's do this.

Also, and in case you didn't notice,
P.S. HAPPY FRIDAY !

I am staring out of this dark tunnel and right into the bright and flowery fields of a four day weekend so excuse me, I have a glass (or 3) of wine waiting at home for me in approximately seven hours, a dance performance tomorrow night, and a day trip in Rhode Island on Sunday.

Too bad it's going to snow.

Oh well, you can't have it all my friends!

The "month" without dessert

LOL, so the reason why month is in quotation marks is obviously because I totally failed at this monthly challenge. I broke this weekend. Broke in half like a dried out chicken bone.

Instead of my month without dessert, I will tell you about my 11 days without dessert.

I began this challenge on the very first day of March to challenge myself to resist desserts. Not all sugars, because even I can acknowledge that that would be damn near impossible for me to do right off the get. But things that I was previously eating in abundance, that were obviously sugary and bad for me.

Donuts. Cookies. Chocolate. Candies. Cake. Cupcakes. Ice cream.

You get it now? I would literally have a donut for breakfast, six cookies when I got home from work, and four Reeses cups in between teaching dance classes. Not to mention my addiction to sugary iced coffee syrups. I weened myself off that awhile ago but I used to get an iced coffee from Dunkin almost EVERY DAY over the summer.

So yes, the challenge commenced on March 1st. And I was actually doing a great job!
What worked for me was that I completely avoided looking inside places that had the forbidden food. I didn't even open the cabinets in my house once in 11 days. Because that is where all the gross processed food is usually kept! So I'm actually sure I also ate a lot less processed food in 11 days too.

One that I noticed was that I didn't crave it too much. But I was slightly irritable. I got my period near the beginning of the month and struggled through that to resist eating comfort food. I would say that I definitely noticed craving other foods more strongly. Like cheese, for example. And pasta. So things that are also not so good for me, but not as terrible as sugar.

What broke me was Lucas's mother. His annoyingly retired, blissfully baking mother. Who cooked the most moist and delicious looking Guinness brownies on Saturday that I literally could not resist. I had ONE BITE. And that was a slippery slope that led to two brownies for breakfast, chocolate lava cake for dessert after lunch, and two Reeses Christmas trees before dance class yesterday.

I'll be honest. It was a sweet relief to eat something delicious and chocolatey again. But after having a couple of bites, I didn't go back in for more (AND MORE AND MORE AND MORE) like I usually would. I think once your body is off sugar for a little while, it realizes how overpoweringly sweet the taste is and it's a little overwhelming. Almost too rich. But omg so delicious.

So that's that. I failed! But I'm shocked at my own willpower for those 11 days. And who's to say I can't break that record. I can put those Reeses Christmas trees behind me and set my sights for the next 12, 13, maybe even 14 days! The sky is the limit. Time to put locks on the cupboards.

Realistic March Goals

AH, THE FRESHNESS THAT COMES WITH THE BEGINNING OF A NEW MONTH.

Happy March! It's sad how happy I've been to get a fresh start these past few months. The beginning has promise but by the end it's turned sour. Crossing my fingers this doesn't happen again this month.

For starters, lemme recap how I did for February's goal:

1. Buy a vehicle. This is ESSENTIAL. Well, I haven't actually BOUGHT a vehicle yet, but I have the cash pulled out of my bank account, have done mad research, test drove a car, and have 2+ appointments for this Wednesday, so this is promising!
2. Create a realistic and maintainable budget on paper/in excel format so that I can hold myself accountable to every penny I spend. I'mma be completely honest, I didn't work on this at all.
3. Read my three new books; The Body Book by Cameron Diaz, Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, and You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. I only started reading Big Little Lies but I'm actually almost done and it's SO FREAKING GOOD. Like, I need to write a review and read all her other books.
4. Do something cute, hand-made, and special for my sweetie for Valentine’s Day. I made the CUTEST HANDMADE CARD. And then also bought $200 concert tickets for his birthday...
5. Get a move on in this blog – set it up on Bloglovin’, figure out what the heck an RSS feed is, try to get comments enabled and a newsletter – generally a giant list of things I have absolutely no idea how to do. (FYI: This blog is never going to have one of those fancy headers called “Blog Resources” like most successful blogs do because I don’t know the difference between CSS and SEO… so there’s that). I may not have any followers or readers but DAMNIT I'm proud of how good this blog looks and how many things I've done for it.
6. In the theme of Valentine’s Day pampering, take care of MYSELF more. I've done my nails twice this month, plus a coconut oil hair treatment. #pampered #blessed
7. Pass Spinning certification and get assigned at least one Spin class to teach at the gym I work at! So I haven't passed the online exam yet (on the to-do list for Thursday) but I did complete the workshop and have started making Spin profiles!

So I didn't do TOO badly!
I always make super crazy goals for myself that I know I probably won't be able to accomplish, ugh. With all that being said, here are my semi-realistic goals for March!!!

1. Buy a vehicle. I MEAN IT THIS TIME.
2. Eat clean. Don't eat a single item of processed sugar. Not a single one. When the temptation strikes, eat fruit or drink tea or make a smoothie.
3. Be active AF. Hit daily step goal every single day. Go for a walk outside every day that it's nice out.
4. Get your read on. Finish reading Big Little Lies and then really dive into The Body Book.
5. Be proactive. Plan out breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the entire month.
6. Out with the old. Spring clean my room and my closet. Donate/sell anything that I haven't worn in a year/that doesn't fit in with my current personal style.
7. You are #1. Continue to take care of myself because it felt damn good. Do my nails. Treat my hair. Shave my legs more often... GET A MASSAGE.
8. Try something new! Take a Zumba class, a Yoga class, and a Bootcamp style class booked through my amazing new fitness find, the MindBody app.

YOU CAN DO IT.

Realistic February Goals

I’m not TOO into astrology, but I have to tell you, I read my yearly horoscope this morning and shit was SPOT ON.

Financial troubles on the horizons? Well, my car didn’t start again this morning, so I’d say yupp!

A month-long slump in January? Definitely.

September is going to be about reaching towards my long-term goals? Hello grad school applications!

I guess Mercury is finally out of retrograde, meaning that I’ll be feeling more productive, happier, and a lot less like my whole world is falling to pieces. According to my horoscope, 2016 is the year I will be “giving structure to my dreams”.

So to kick February off on the right side of the bed, here is a list of my small-ish February goals:

1. Buy a vehicle. This is ESSENTIAL.
2. Create a realistic and maintainable budget on paper/in excel format so that I can hold myself accountable to every penny I spend.
3. Read my three new books; The Body Book by Cameron Diaz, Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, and You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero.
4. Do something cute, hand-made, and special for my sweetie for Valentine’s Day.
6. In the theme of Valentine’s Day pampering, take care of MYSELF more. Deep condition my hair, use the thickest body butter, paint my nails and massage oil into my cuticles… all of this is ideal and wonderful but I often have no idea how picture-perfect, put together girls have the TIME to rub all of these cremes and oils into their hair and body. This month I’m going to try to figure that out!
7. Pass Spinning certification and get assigned at least one Spin class to teach at the gym I work at!

Goals are great, they hold you accountable and if you verbalize them or write them down, they make you feel guilty if you don’t complete them!
