All The December Things!

Happy December! 

Happy last month of 2018, happy month filled with celebration & twinkle lights, happy birthday month to me!!!!

My Decembers are notoriously BUSY. I remember my post in this blog from 2 years ago and my December plans were a hot mess. I was trying to cram sooo much into one month! Well, this year is actually pretty similar! Let's first take a look back at my November goals to see how I did, and then journey down the path of the craziest month of the year!

November Goals: 
1. Write poetry. I haven't been writing a lot of poetry, but I sure have been writing a lot besides that!
2. Take grad school steps. I submitted my application to my first school last night!!!
3. Make fun plans. SO MANY! Four friends are coming to visit me today (we're doing SantaCon Boston!), and I'm having a pajama party at my friend's house for my birthday!
4. Meal prep. I kinda did this, but because of Thanksgiving leftovers I have been HEAVILY putting off grocery shopping (also to save $), soooo this one was kind of a fail this month.
5. Contribute to family dinners. Also a fail! Thanksgiving snuck up on me and I didn't end up having time to buy ingredients!
6. Move that body. I had one AMAZING week of workouts and then I fell off after Thanksgiving! But I know I can do it now, I just need to stick to the schedule I made myself.
7. Be grateful! Of course! So grateful for the holidays, family, and friends. And of course, Cosmo.

This December is another crazy month, so I'm breaking it down by weeks again, just like I did all those years ago! 

Week 1: December 1st to 8th
  • SanataCon Boston with my CT friends is December 1st! Be a great hostess, clean the house, get appetizers & alcohol.
  • December 7th is my friend Leora's birthday! Go out to drinks with her!
  • December 8th is Courtney's housewarming party/Christmas party in CT! Remember to bring a nice bottle of wine and Yankee swap gift!

Week 2: December 9th to 15th
  • Start buying Christmas presents on Amazon before it's too late! 
  • This is the only weekend I don't have plans, so relax & restore for the rest of the month!

Week 3: December 16th to 22nd
  • My birthday week!!!!!
  • Out for drinks with friends on the 19th to celebrate my unfortunate aging! 
  • Bake cookies for the staff cookie swap on the 20th
  • Get an ugly Christmas sweater and Yankee swap gift for the staff holiday party on the 20th
  • Pajama party with my friends in CT on either the 19th or the 20th (because nothing says "I'm elderly" like asking your friends to throw you a pajama party so you don't have to go outside in the cold!)

Week 4: December 22nd to 31st
  • Enjoy Christmas and my Christmas vacation from work to the FULLEST! 
  • Read a ton of good books
  • Sleep in & relax
  • Write write write! 
  • Spend New Year's Eve with my friends (as opposed to last year when I didn't do anything for some reason and was extremely bitter about it) !!!

Overarching Goals for December:
- Don't spend money unless I absolutely need to!
- Get back into my weekly workout habit! 
- Work on consistency in creativity (art, drawing, writing, blogging)
- Stay on top of bills! 
- Be present & enjoy the magic of this season! 


Notes On Thankfulness.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve!
I write this from the couch of my parent's house, slightly exhausted after sitting in holiday traffic for 2 hours. However, last year it took me nearly 4 hours to get home for Thanksgiving, so it's hard to complain!

My dad just bundled up the two dogs in their winter coats (too adorable to handle), the potent smell of dark chocolate brownies is wafting from the oven, and my mom is trying to get me to help her unsubscribe from pornographic emails that she's been spammed with. There's truly no place like home for the holidays.

I did this tag two years ago (since I always seem to forget that I almost completely took 2017 off from blogging/writing in general) and it was so cute to look back on it, so here it is again this year!

The many beautiful things that I'm thankful for, both this year, this week, and this moment...


This year:

  • TRAVEL! Having the freedom to take my tax return (lol) and turn it into my first bonafied road trip adventure!
  • My kitty boy Cosmo. Words cannot describe my love & adoration for this small orange creature.
  • My parent's continued health. <3
  • Animals in general. There has never been a time that I am more grateful that I became a bit more woke and decided to become a vegetarian. I've said it before and I'll say it again, animals don't deserve us. 
  • My dear friends, who have really supported me this year in ways both big and small. 
  • My health and liveliness. Especially with all of the dangers in this country, the fear of walking into a store, yoga class, bar, church, school, movie theater. That I am still alive and well. 

This week:

  • One of my students on a behavior plan had a perfect week! She is awesome and I'm so proud of her.
  • The chillest day of hanging out with two super easy students and watching such a cute movie, "Ferdinand"!
  • My school's staff Friendsgiving! So much food, everyone went all out.
  • Trader Joe's. It just always comes through in the clutch. 
  • Having a short holiday week is just marvelous.

This moment:

  • My parent's couch, where I am perched and content.
  • The smell of dark chocolate brownies baking.
  • My new-ish laptop that is so enjoyable to use... honestly how did I get anything done without a functioning laptop??
  • The fact that it didn't take me nearly as long as I thought it would to drive home! 
  • Looking forward to so much food, family, and friends time this weekend. My three favorite F's. 

Please take a moment to reflect and be mindful of the true origins of Thanksgiving and where your food is actually coming from if you're eating meat this holiday season. Sorry to be that person, but I am that person! :) Happy Thanksgiving! 

Christmas Gift Ideas for the Cat-Loving Wellness Junkie.

AKA, my personal Christmas wish-list that I'm emailing my mom!

I never ask for big ticket items for Christmas or my birthday (which are inconveniently five days apart...). It is just way more fun for me to open a wide variety of trinkets, books, & skincare. I am recently committed to transferring all of my beauty items to cruelty-free/vegan andddd of course I'm asking for stuff for my son (aka Cosmo the cat).

Maybe it's weird to share my personal Christmas list (and my parents definitely won't be getting me all of these things, specifically probably not the cat stroller, but a girl can dream) but I think there are some fun unique things on here, so if you're anything like me, enjoy!


1. Essential oils stuff. Specifically cedarwood, frankincense, & geranium essential oils because my extensive research has shown that these are not toxic to cats. I am also asking for a car diffuser/humidifier so that I can calm/energize myself while diffusing the rest of my oils on my ridiculously long commutes.

2. Cat accessories. Because I am a true crazy cat lady! I love this cat activity board so that he doesn't gobble up all of his food too quick and also to stimulate his little mind! He also needs a new fishing pole toy since he completely destroyed his old one, so I like this toy pack from Amazon. And just because I'm extremely crazy, I'm asking for a cat stroller.

3. Cruelty-free skincare. Lately I had really been wanting to switch over to all cruelty-free products but buying them all at once is overwhelming, so I'm asking for some for my birthday (December 20th!). The brand Yes to is great, so I'd love the Yes to Cucumbers Face Kit and this Yes to Blueberries Mask. Shea Moisture also has some really cool new vegan skincare!

4. Books. Specifically Adventure CatsEssential Oils Everyday and the Solo Traveler's Handbook.

5. Miscellaneous. I have been craving a larger water bottle, specifically a hydroflask because they are so functional and heavy duty. I somehow lost my laptop sleeve so I'm asking for a cute new one. I  scoured through Amazon until I found the perfect yellow backpack for all my work/travel needs.

Stocking Stuffer Ideas:
  • Scrunchies
  • Some adorable Puravida rings like the compass, wave, or little moon! (they always have a crazy good sale on Black Friday!) 
  • Look at these beautiful pens for my planner! 
  • This pack of cat socks is unbelievable. 
  • I could also always do with practical things in my stocking, like a Starbucks gift card, razors, toothpaste, and vitamins. LOL.

5 Easy Ways To Make Extra Money When Times Are Tough!

I am a twenty-something who still has not figured out their finances.

I know this is terrible. I know that paying my bills consistently late is screwing my credit score, potentially irreversibly. But I just do not have that innate responsibility gene that my Virgo friend, Alicia, so proudly possesses!

That said, I am not a total mess. I do have a two substantial jobs, but sometimes even this is not enough to live right outside of Boston and lead the lifestyle that I desire. So here are five of my personally tested, tried and true, somewhat outside of the box ways to make pretty much instant money when the need to pay your bills on time hits (and it will)!


1. Become a dog walker.
I signed up for Wag because I live close to a city, and there are dogs to walk galore! If you don't live near a city, there is Rover, and Care.com has a pet needs option. This is a great way to make some extra money, and I find myself walking dogs on the weekends if the weather is nice and I don't have any plans. What a great way to waste a few hours - exercise and hanging out with cute dogs!

2. Find date-night babysitting on Care.com and Sittercity.com.
My schedule is pretty packed with my school and tutoring jobs, but every now and then I'll have a weekend with no plans and wonder how to make money at night when it's too late to walk dogs. Well, here is the solution! Switch your search criteria on these websites to "one-time" and behold - a plethora of date night babysitting! And best yet, usually the kids are sleeping during these times, so could it really get any easier?

3. Sell random stuff on Facebook Marketplace.
This is for when times are truly tough. I have sold artwork, technology, and jewelry all on Facebook Marketplace and it's just too easy. The only frustrating thing is that sometimes your items may take awhile to sell - I have a friend who has been trying to get rid of her bed frame for two weeks. But when they do sell, there's instant cash for you!

4. Sign up to be a test subject in the name of science!
I haven't personally done this myself, but my friend with PTSD has been a test subject for a pretty intensive medical study where she sometimes got up to $500 for each session. Yes, she did get injected with different dosages of drugs, but it's in the name of science (and being poor)! These can often be found on Craigslist, but I'm sure there are other more reputable websites to find them if you try a quick Google search or look up local colleges/universities.

5. Return recent impulse purchases. 
We are all guilty of spending $100 at Target on Christmas decorations. Oh, just me? Well if you have a recent impulse purchase that is resulting in not being able to pay your bills, maybe make sure you kept the receipt and just take the stuff back. Money may not buy happiness, but it does buy happy feelings of financial security!

I hope this helped some of the hustlers out there! I know it isn't easy for me to keep track of my money, but knowing that there are always ways to make some extra coin really helps my sanity when I just NEED to go sweater shopping but my electric bill is 2 months past due.

A Christmas Mistake!

Happy Saturday! 

This week was an odd one. I somehow mustered the energy to go to the gym and do some killer workouts three days in a row! Monday was an intense heavy legs day, Tuesday I went to the gym after tutoring (so at 8pm, who am I???) and did back & biceps, and Wednesday was chest & triceps and 30 minutes of cardio! And I am honestly still sore.

I still plan to go to the gym today (fingers crossed) but I am feeling so lazy and also have a home to-do list that I need to get done. Involving putting away laundry and oh yeah, applying to grad school. I love being last minute for important things! I will also watch a healthy number of SVU episodes, Christmas cooking specials, and potentially How The Grinch Stole Christmas (third time now).


I wanted to take this opportunity to warn you about the dangers of Christmas decor shopping.

Because Target, Dollar Tree, and Michael's got me, and they got me good.

I went Christmas shopping last weekend in Connecticut with my friend Shawn, then came back to Mass and proceeded to spend another hundred dollars at the Target dollar spot. And now I can barely afford groceries! So beware, budget accordingly, and don't do what I did. Pictured above are my Dollar Tree & Michael's finds, but Target dollar spot is just glorious and irresistible.

There is something about decorating for Christmas that just brings me so much joy. I was talking about it with my friend Alicia today as we browsed Christmas Tree Shop about how it evokes the feeling of hygge. I am obsessed with this Danish concept!

Coziness, candles flickering, logs burning in the fire, knit blankets, comfort food, and friends all gathered around. 

Nothing like hygge for the holidays! Just learn from my mistakes and don't spend your Christmas shopping budget on fun decor alone. Oops!

The Friday Five

Hello Friday, and welcome back The Friday Five!

This week was ROUGH. Work was extremely overwhelming and all the shit I had to deal with yesterday pretty much sucked out some of my soul.

Working with kids is great and I love it, but there are some kids who are just beyond frustrating, no one can figure out where their bad behavior is stemming from, and even the principal is at a loss! So that's what we've been dealing with, ugh. Soooooo I decided that today I needed a mental health day because I knew that if I went into work there was no way I would have been able to give my students my best self, and I hadn't taken a sick day in a while!

I had a relaxing morning with Cosmo, watching The Grinch (for the second time since Halloween...), and cooked myself a healthy breakfast and lunch. I'm visiting CT again this weekend, so I was able to leave earlier than usual on a Friday and BEAT TRAFFIC!!!


Here are some of my favorite things that brightened this dull & difficult week:

01) This ridiculous, adorable Christmas cat house from Target. I got Cosmo a gingerbread one last year, and this year they have this double-decker Hot Cocoa Cafe with scratchers on the inside and on top. It was a little bit challenging to put together (I had to reinforce everything with tape), but how could I resist this? I plan to make this our Christmas tradition & get him the new one every year.

02) I have been loving two songs featuring the queen herself, Ariana Grande. Firstly, I randomly found Dance To This by Troye Sivan ft. Ariana Grande. What a mellow, sensual bop. Then there's the song that changed the break-up song game.  Fire!!!

03) As mentioned previously, I have already watched The Grinch on Netflix twice and it is November 9th. Bless Netflix for featuring this absolutely Christmas classic. I'm estimating I will be watching it approximately 35 more times before Christmas.

04) I get really into certain meals some weeks, and this week is just like that. I have been loving whipping up a quick breakfast burrito in the mornings - with egg whites, spinach, feta, salt & pepper, and a whole wheat wrap, this is literally the easiest filling breakfast (maybe besides overnight oats)!

05) Google Calendar!!!! I went absolutely ham color-coding, organizing, and setting up my Google Calendar earlier this week & I already have a good feeling that this is going to stick. I am notorious for not sticking to one consistent method of planning or setting reminders for myself. But there is something very satisfying about Google Cal syncing to my phone and seeing it all laid out on my laptop & feeling so in control of my life. Fingers crossed this sticks and helps me to adult a little more efficiently!

I will be spending time at home in Connecticut this weekend - helping a friend decorate her new home for Christmas (lol, yes already!), going to a hockey game with my parents, doing laundry, & hopefully working on some writing/grad school stuff.

Weekend Warrior: Rockport, MA

Happy Sunday! 

My best friend, Shawn, came up from Connecticut to visit me today! We contemplated having a quiet day binging movies & stuffing our faces, but decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and take a day trip from the Boston area to Rockport, MA!


Driving time: ~1 hour each way
Sites to see: Halibut Point State Park, The Ice Cream Store, Tuck's Candyshop

You can take the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway if you have the time - just have your GPS bring you to the starting point, near Lynn, and follow the Byway signs! This is really fun because you can just turn your GPS off & enjoy the pretty coastal drive. The entire route goes all the way past Newburyport, and I haven't done the entire drive yet, but I plan to!

Shawn & I decided we wanted to spend more quality time in Rockport, so we took the highway to Halibut Point State Park. It was a sunny, brisk day but I'd actually worked up a sweat by the time we headed back to the car. There's a lot that's normally $10 for out-of-state plates, but parking fees end on October 31st, so it was perfect timing!

The salt air stung our noses and burned so good in our lungs as we muddied our boots & walked through thorn bushes, exploring the rocky coastline & the displays of stone cairns!

We drove to Bearskin Neck, the main drag in Rockport, and found a parking spot to explore the adorable, cottage-like art galleries, souvenir shops, & antique stores in downtown Rockport! 

We popped into a vintage bookstore where I became enamored by some colorful postcards, then grabbed wraps at the Bean & Leaf Cafe. Little did we know that right next door at The Ice Cream Store, it was FREE ICE CREAM DAY! How lucky were we?? 

Shawn got a black raspberry on a cone & I got a Low Tide - a delicious, fudgy, mocha concoction that made my wildest lactose-intolerant dreams come true. Whoops! 

We couldn't leave without stopping into a local candy store and dropping almost $20 on an assortment of gummies, truffles, fudge, & chocolate-dipped pretzels. Truly no self control over here. 


They call Rockport/Cape Ann the "Cape Cod of the North". 

I completely agree. It has all of the New England charm, kitschy stores, nautical touches, and historical architecture that it's sister in the south has. But it's much more accessible to me, and maybe a little bit overlooked! 

I live for a day trip. Being a weekend warrior means using your precious days off to get out & explore your local destinations. There is only so much time, and there is so much to see! Use your time wisely & the world is your oyster!

Utah's 5 National Parks & 1 National Monument in 8 Days!

All of these posts about my epic Utah road trip are MONTHS late to the party, but now that I'm consistently blogging again, I am so excited to share all the details about this wild adventure I had back in April!!!!

Back in late January I asked my friend from college, Alicia, if she wanted to go on a road trip around Utah with me. This was completely on a whim, impulsive, and random (my honest to goodness favorite way to plan trips... so Sagittarius of me haha!). She said yes! And just a few short months later, we were on the road to Utah's Mighty Five, with a couple of other bonus sites thrown in to make sure we got the most bang for our buck out of our short 8 day trip!

Alicia and I are both committed to ballin' on a budget, so this trip was remarkably wallet friendly. If a nanny and a school counselor can afford it, you can too!


Alicia is one of the best planners I know - she's planning on going back to school for Hospitality Management to become an event planner! So I'll admit, much of this itinerary was made by her amazing Virgo-ian attention to detail. We worked on this about two months before our trip, and even though it was cutting it close with booking a lot of campsites, we were to able to fit it all in and find some really awesome places to stay!

About two months before our trip, I found super reasonable round-trip flights from Boston to Salt Lake City, UT for about $240 total! One of my specialties is scouring the internet for cheap flights. I want to make a longer post about this, but my top tips are using Skyscanner and Google Flights. I also have no problem sleeping in an airport during a crazy layover to save a ton of $$$ (I've slept in 4 airports lol). We arrived in Salt Lake City around 11pm, picked up our rental car from the airport (which was super easy to navigate, thanks Utah!), and drove to our Airbnb, Kyle's Bungalow

Day 1: Salt Lake City to Zion National Park
Drive time: 4.5 hours
We stopped at a Wal-Mart in SLC to pick up food and supplies and ended up spending about $60 total on food since we split the total cost, and this fed us for the majority of the trip! I want to write a separate post on what we stocked up on to save money while roadtripping and camping, but it was a lot of pasta sides, cans of soup, and granola bars! The drive to Zion was jaw-dropping, especially since neither of us had been to the Southwest before, so since everything was brand new & beautiful, the drive went by very fast!

You can only book South Campground starting exactly 2 weeks in advance, so we set an alarm SUPER early that day before our trip to make sure we got it booked. We set up our tent in the early afternoon and took a short, easy hike to Emerald Pools, which was a great way to get ourselves acclimated to the park and the ridiculously easy shuttle system that takes you directly to the start of most trailheads.

Day 2: Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon National Park
Drive time: about 2 hours
I recommend waking up super early on your second day to fit in two epic, must do, bucket list hikes in Zion - Angel's Landing & The Narrows. Both are extremely popular, but Angel's Landing almost killed me (aka was the most strenuous/terrifying/rewarding hike I've ever done and probably will ever do), so I recommend tackling this challenge head-on bright & early in the morning! We woke up around 6:30am and planned to hit the trail around 7/7:30. There were plenty of people who had beat us to the first shuttle (I think we caught the second one), so Angel's Landing was already pretty busy. However, it got MUCH more crowded on our way back, so I'm so glad we did this first. This hike, as I'm sure you know, is NOT for the faint of heart. Many people stopped at a certain point, right before the section that involves a lot of chains and terrifying drop-offs. Despite my very real, very intense fear of heights I made it to the summit! The views are spectacular and if even a small part of you thinks that you can handle your fear, I recommend pressing on.

We stopped at a picnic area for lunch after our much easier descent from Angel's Landing, and then took the shuttle down to The Narrows. I am a water lover, so I adored this hike that goes straight through two cliffs and is a straight up trek through water. We didn't rent the proper waterproof gear so couldn't go too far into the hike, so that's the only regret I have here. Then we were off to Bryce Canyon, where we enjoyed a stay in an honest to goodness teepee at Ruby's Inn Teepee. Staying in a teepee was cool but I won't lie, I almost froze to death this night because Bryce Canyon is notoriously the coldest park in Utah!

Day 3: Bryce Canyon to Escalante, UT
Drive time: 1 hour
Wake up early from your teepee slumber and take a HOT shower to unfreeze your bones. Then head out to the Bryce Canyon Visitor's Center to plan out what hikes you want to do. We decided to combine the Queen's Garden & Navajo Loop Trails, after taking a shuttle from the Visitor's Center to Sunset Point which came out to a 3 mile hike featuring switchbacks and hoodoos galore!

We decided to drive some of the scenic route of the park, and stopped at Inspiration Point for another stunning view. We were also lucky enough to see some mule deer and pronghorn antelope on the sides of the road! This afternoon we drove over to Escalante, UT for our adventures at Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. We stayed in a log cabin through Escalante Outfitters for only $64 and it was worth every penny! Even though we'd only camped two nights, the freezing cold night in Bryce made me appreciate a bed in a heated cabin 100% more. They had a cute gift shop and little cafe where we got DELICIOUS pizza & ciders, and we hit the hay early because we had some epic hikes planned the next day.

Day 4: Grand Staircase to Capitol Reef National Park
Drive time: 1 hour & 20 minutes
This was a wild day. Mostly because this national monument is nowhere near as commercialized and tourist friendly as many of the national parks! We had to ask the locals at Escalante Outfitters for recommendations and directions (which I highly recommend because they were so nice and helpful) and ended up deciding on two major hikes, Zebra Slot Canyon & Lower Calf Creek Falls. Finding Zebra Slot Canyon is extremely tricky and I recommend this blog post for detailed directions. Once you get there, I also recommend using the map of Utah that you hopefully downloaded to your phone on Google Maps to point you in the right direction of the actual slot canyon because the GPS service somehow works with no data. If you don't want to wander through the desert for an extra hour like we did, this is a good idea!

Once you actually get to the slot canyon it's very short but beautiful! It looks just like Antelope Canyon in Arizona. This hike was rough since we added so much extra time trying to find the entrance to the slot, but we rallied and headed to Lower Calf Creek Falls. This hike was more heavily trafficked than the slot, and we were so tired from the first hike, but we made it and the gorgeous waterfall at the end of the trail was so worth it! I highly recommend stopping in Escalante, a place I feel most people may look over, as a part of your Utah road trip.

After hiking to the falls, I somehow found the strength to drive to our campsite at Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park.

Day 5: Capital Reef & Canyonlands to Moab
Drive time: 2.5-3 hours
We woke up early in Capital Reef and hiked Cohab Canyon, which was a fun short hike for the morning. We even ended up finding a small slot canyon on the trail! This was kind of a wonky day because we had so much to do and see along our driving. We stopped at the very popular Gifford House, which is at the campground, on our way out for their famous cinnamon buns & souvenirs.

We decided to drive through Canyonlands, rather than stop and stay there in order to fit all of the national parks into our itinerary. We stopped at the visitor's center and they recommended Mesa Arch (ridiculously popular & touristy) and Upheaval Dome (a giant crater). Both were relatively short and easy hikes.

We stopped at Dead Horse Point State Park before heading to Moab because I'd read that it was a really beautiful viewpoint but what I did not read was that it costs $10 and we literally only wanted to see the view for like 5 minutes. So it wasn't entirely worth it for us because we weren't stopping there to hike at all. We headed into Moab from there and stayed at the Lazy Lizard Hostel for the night, but not before stopping at a Mexican restaurant on the main strip for some quesadillas and margaritas as big as our heads!

Day 6: Arches National Park
Drive time: None
Moab was our home base for the day! We had made some friends at the hostel (I highly recommend this hostel, and honestly most hostels because they are CHEAP and fun) and decided to set out early in the morning with one of our new friends to hike Delicate Arch (3 miles) and the Devil's Garden Loop (7~ miles). Our new friend was a geology major so she was able to tell us a lot about the formation of the arches and fins, which was so convenient!

We stayed at the Lazy Lizard another night since we didn't have to drive anywhere until morning, so we got some beers at the local liquor store and spent the night shooting the shit with the wanderers and gypsies of the hostel. The Southwest is a much different world than New England.

Drive time: 3 hours
We stopped on the way out of Moab at this funky cafe that offered vegan options! I got a delicious tofu scramble and a smoothie. Then we spent some time (but I could have spent hours) at this Rock Shop on the main strip. In case you don't know what a rock shop is, it offers thousands of varieties of crystals & minerals, usually dinosaur bones & fossils, and so much more. I love crystals, so I was in heaven. I probably got 6 or 7 but could have gotten hundreds!

The drive to Fifth Water Hot Spring was interesting because we saw the shift in landscape from the orange hues of the desert to scrubby forest, to towering pine trees. We figured a hot spring would be a perfect way to soak our muscles and close out our trip. The hike to the hot spring was actually pretty challenging because we had been used to flat desert and this hike had some elevation gain! But the reward was great - the hot spring wasn't that crowded, the water was VERY hot, and there was even a small waterfall with pools of cooler spring water to soak in between the hot sulfuric pools. We were originally going to camp near the hot spring, but decided we could spring for an Airbnb a little closer to the airport, in Provo. After having our fill of soaking, this is where we drove and stayed the night!


Day 8: Explore Salt Lake City
Drive time: 45 mins
We drove from Provo to Salt Lake City to explore before our flight (which wasn't until 11pm)! Take pictures of all the LDS buildings and the many tulips in Temple Square. We got avocado toast at this super hipster coffee shop in a warehouse, then went shopping at Forever21 (lol, a far cry from our adventures in the desert). There's a really nice outdoor shopping mall in SLC and we just had to explore! We got moscow mules at The Green Pig, a rooftop bar, then decided to get tattoos at Anchor Ink to commemorate our incredible experience. By day 8 we were exhausted and ready to head home after a week truly jam-packed with adventures.


Major Pro Tips:
  • Download an entire map of Utah to your phone on Google Maps. This saved us while hiking in Escalante!
  • Pack hiking boots and hiking sandals. The less strenuous hikes were way more comfortable in my hiking sandals.
  • Book your campgrounds as far in advance as your able to!
  • Buy the $80 National Park pass, you save so much money on entrance fees.
  • Unless you are a seasoned camper, sprinkle some days of sleeping in an actual bed in between your days of camping. 
  • Do not stay in a teepee near Bryce Canyon unless you have a very heavy duty sleeping bag!

I hope this extremely long guide helps anyone, or inspires anyone, who might want to take this epic trip. I honestly can't recommend it anymore highly and I'm just as shocked as you probably are how much we were able to fit into just 8 days.

October Recap & November Goals


Happy November! 

This is the part of the month where I take a look at how I did in October, and make a beautiful roadmap of plans for the current month. Here were my October goals:

1. Write, write, write.  - Yes, I did! I could of course do more, but I got a start on generating some ideas for written projects. And of course, I blogged!
2. Get on the grad school grind. - I emailed two of my college professors asking for recommendation letters and they said of course!
3. Stick to the TIU 30 Day Challenge! - Lololol, this did not happen.
4. Purge my apartment and prep guest bedroom in CT.  - I got rid of so much shit in my apartment, spent an entire day cleaning out my closet, and made my guest bedroom in CT very live-able for when I go home to visit my parents. Yay!


Novembers goals & hopes & dreams: 
  
1. Write that poetry. I brainstormed & had great ideas, now I need to execute the ideas.

2. Take those grad school steps. I literally have to apply to one school before Dec. 1st, and I work best under pressure so now is the time to get. it. done.

3. Plan those fun events. I want to have a Christmas party at my apartment with my friends from MA & CT, so I need to plan that! I also need to plan what I'm doing for my birthday this year because it sneaks up on me so quickly.

4. Prep that healthy food. Meal-prepping is the bane of my existence because I hate cooking, so this will probably be a goal every single month.

5. Contribute to those family dinners. I want to bring something cute & vegan to Thanksgiving dinner this year.

6. Move that body. I started a little project called [move]mber on my dance instagram account where I post a video of myself dancing every day this month! I want to make sure I stay committed to this.

7. Thank those lucky stars! Being grateful & consistently writing down the things I'm thankful for subconsciously puts me into a more peaceful, present mood. I don't even realize it until I think back on when I was doing this consistently and then I'm like, oh... those were the good 'ol days.


I can't wait to read your goals & see how much we've accomplished by the end of the month! 

What I Loved In October!

I don't know how this happened, but I blinked and October was over. This month was even worse than September! There's something about the tumultuous nature of the last three months of the year - preparing for Halloween, planning for Thanksgiving, picking out the perfect gifts for Christmas - that makes it all pass in a whirlwind.


That's why I'm soooo glad that I'm blogging again, so I can try to keep track of all these little moments and details. Like my favoriteeeee:

Books
I got really into poetry again this month, with the re-discovery of my Kindle which had several poetry books downloaded onto it! My favorite by far was salt, by Nayirrah Waheed I guarantee you've heard at least one iconic poem from this moving collection, but it's worth it to sit down and read the entire thing cover to cover. I highlighted so many poems, I feel like I need to go back and read it all again.

Podcasts
A major reason that I survive my commute to and from work is a variety of podcasts. I've been loving Ghost of a Podcast, which bridges astrology, life advice, and social justice with no bullshit! Jessica Lanyadoo is a bad bitch/witch and it comes out every Sunday so that you can have an idea of what the cosmos has in store for your week.

Show/Movie
Honestly, The Voice. I am a sucker for a reality competition show, and now that Big Brother and The Bachelor are over (for now), I am committed to this show. I love the judges (Kelly Clarkson is adorable) and the talent in un-freaking-belieavable. The difference between The Voice and American Idol is ridiculous. If you think American Idol is whack (which I do), give this show a chance. The tears will roll.

Music
This has been a month of lots of musical discoveries. My taste is all over the place, so these are just a few. Maggie Rogers is a goddess. I recommend her songs Alaska, Dog Years, Light On, and Fallingwater. Or just all of them. I was supposed to go see her this weekend in Portland but it got moved to March because she booked SNL!

Shakey Graves is more rock/folk with the sickest guitar skills. I haven't listened to much of his music, but my favorite song so far is Roll The Bones. It's great driving music for this season.

And lastly, Gregory Alan Isakov has the most soothing folky, autumnal music. His song, Big Black Car, will always evoke so much nostalgia in me because that was the first song I danced to for dance company auditions back when I was a freshman in college!

Life hack
Using coconut oil spray as body lotion and a leave-in (then wash-out) hair treatment. I heard this on a podcast recently and my mind was utterly blown that I hadn't thought of it myself.


Costume Theme 
Soooo all of the high school staff at my school decided to be Harry Potter characters for Halloween this year (my idea). I think I made a pretty great Professor Trelawney with an entire costume found at Goodwill.Umbridge walked around scolding children and writing educational decrees, and Gilderoy Lockhart gave out autographed headshots to anyone who asked (or didn't ask).  It pretty much made my wildest dreams come true.

Sunday Coffee Date.

Good morning! 

It's a beautiful and chilly fall Sunday after yesterday's downpour. I seriously did not step foot out of my parents house yesterday. All of us were exhausted from staying up late on Friday night; me because I went to a Halloween party at my friend's house, and my parents because they were up until 3 in the morning watching the Red Sox game which went to 18 innings! 



So yesterday, we had the laziest of days. Watching lots of college football with my dad, catching my mom up on the The Voice, and having a movie night with both of my parents watching "The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown". So you think I act like a toddler when I'm home visiting my parents? You're not wrong!

This is Sunday coffee date: Confessions Edition. Because I just feel like being honest about where I'm at and getting some things off my chest. That life is fine, but it's also been really challenging lately. And here are some reasons why:

I haven't been working out as often as I should. I'm always really hard on myself about keeping a workout schedule, and starting my new job tutoring last week had my whole schedule messed up. Now I know that I'm tutoring Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I need to commit myself to hit my fav workout classes Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday morning at the very least. I can immediately tell when my body is pissed at me for not moving it and getting those endorphins, so I am really feeling this lapse in working out in my physical and mental health!

My new job makes it essential for me to have a tidy email inbox. This is such a small thing, but my inbox is a disaster! I have so many emails from random companies that I need to unsubscribe from. It makes me feel so disorganized when I have an email from one of my new supervisors and I need to scroll endlessly through emails that I've never opened and never will open. I have 5,000 that I need to delete and I know other people are much worse, but boy do I need to dedicate some time to this!

Feelings of self-worth are low at the moment. I know this has a lot to do with my seasonal affective disorder. But lately I have been telling myself some very negative thoughts about how nobody will ever love me, and I need to cut that shit out! I always read self-help type pish posh about how you should never say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to a friend. This is IMPORTANT to remember when I get in a negative thought spiral.

Procrastination is a symptom of anxiety. I have been procrastinating emailing my professors and asking them for recommendation letters because I am soooooo anxious about everything that has to do with grad school in general. Again, running through the list of self-doubt in my mind: Is this finally the right program?? Will I regret applying again?? What if I end up hating school counseling?? But one of my co-workers who just graduated with her degree in school counseling last year, put it into perspective for me. You just NEED TO DO IT! Get it over with. Bite the bullet. Once you have the degree, congrats, you have your Masters and you're 100% marketable then you are right now. That's what she said to me during happy hour as I chugged a spiked cider while sweating profusely as I thought about applying to grad school. But she's right, and time is running out, and I need to do it.

When Something Just Doesn't Feel Right

Today I'm writing from the desk where I sit each day during school hours, except all the kids are gone and school hours are over.

I'm writing here because school gets out at 3pm and I have to shadow a study session in Newton at 5pm for the new job I just got! As of Thursday (because that's when I start tutoring solo) I will officially be a fancy shmancy executive functioning tutor!

This is actually my favorite part of working with my students, and a huge part of why I realize I want to get my Masters in School Counseling. In my opinion, everyone has executive functioning deficits but that is another long post for another day! Today I'm here to write about things that just don’t feel right.

Once you get out of the school system, finish up high school and get that college degree, there are literally so many options. And it never fails to blow my mind how most people (unmarried, without kids, without more difficult life circumstances) have the ability to just completely change their life if they want to. Its almost like being drunk with power. You are so powerful in the control room of your life. So am I!

But sometimes it doesn't feel like that. Sometimes you feel trapped or cornered or bullied or compliant in a situation that just doesn't feel right. Maybe there's nothing obviously wrong about it. Your relationship is... okay. Your job is... okay. Your apartment is... okay.



But these major components of your life are not sparking joy. They might drain you - mentally, emotionally, physically. And I'm telling you that I'm right there with you and its going to be okay. Because the beauty about life is that nothing lasts forever, neither good or bad or just mediocre.

Often the first step to change is recognizing that you are unhappy. So if something just doesn't feel right, and maybe you cant explain it, run with that. Try to unpack it. Journal it out. Figure out what the soul suck is and figure out measurable, reasonable, realistic steps that you can take to change it!

That's what I'll be doing.

Good morning! 


Today I'm writing from the couch of my parents house as my dad warms his feet with an electric heater. Yesterday was 82 degrees and we were all wearing shorts, so this is only a bit confusing.

As this first week of October wraps up (I am obsessed with having today off, as it's Columbus Day weekend!) I thought I'd drop a couple nuggets of joy that I've been loving on this past week. I also love looking back on these to remind myself of them at times I'm feeling uninspired or stuck.

Nikki Vegan
This Youtuber dropped into my recommended section and I am soooo grateful for that algorithm. Her videos are unbelievably relaxing and somehow have the coziest vibe to them. Her studio apartment kitchen is adorable but also functional and realistic and her recipes are easy, affordable, and look delicious! I'm not 100% vegan at the moment, but I'm pretty close, and I want to try literally everything she makes. I plan to binge watch about 50 of her videos later this afternoon, before my drive back to Massachusetts.

Small Town Murder podcast
This is the podcast that has been getting me through my long drives and annoying morning commutes. The guys on this podcast are comedians, so if you don't think true crime and comedy should ever mix, it's probably not for you. However, they never make fun of the victims or the victims families (because they're assholes, not scumbags!), more so they rip on the small-town-ness of the majority of these cases and it is so. funny. 

Real Simple magazine
I was walking through the grocery store with my mom yesterday and just had to pick up this magazine. There is something so serene and inspiring about the minimalist design of it's pages. Not to mention this issue had tips for organizing, relaxing, and fall decorating - three of my favorite things.

Cleaning out spaces
I was inspired, upon returning to my parents house, to tackle one of my monthly to-dos and make my old room here more livable. My parents had been using it as a storage space, so I remedied that real quick by transferring a bunch of random objects to their basement. A new duvet cover, freshly washed sheets, and general tidying has made it a much more refreshing space to come home to when I visit Connecticut. Now if only I can transfer this cleaning inspo to my apartment!

Journaling
I haven't physically written in a journal in a while, and while cleaning out my old bedroom I stumbled upon my journal from 2017. Re-reading it start to finish was enlightening. I can't believe I failed to keep a journal in 2018! Obviously I went straight to Barnes & Noble and found an adorable journal hand-crafted in India that I hope to fill with the few remaining bits of this year, and commit to documenting all of next year. It really is wild to look back on my shifting perspectives through the months, and I look forward to being able to do that again!

And lastly... New moon in Libra energy. The new moon is always all about setting up intentions that you want to focus on and grow throughout the moon cycle. As the moon becomes full, the hope is that your intentions will also come to fruition! My new moon mantra, according The Numinous on Girlboss is:
When I commit to clear seeing, I can see my legacy.
This is all about seeing a clear vision of my professional future, and getting out of auto-pilot in my daily activities and habits in order to make conscious and intentional choices that will aid me in pursuit of my dreams. I can get on board with that.

September's Little Moments

I think that it's really easy to lose track of a month. It's really easy to feel like a month just flew by, not much happened, you worked and slept and ate, repeat. And that's why I think it's important to go back and remember the little moments, fun times with friends, and things that you may have forgotten about!

September felt like it flew by. But then again, when I was scrolling back through these photos, my adventures from September 1st feel like they were so long ago. How does this happen!?

Let's take a look...





On September 1st, my good friend Alicia and I decided to start our month off with a bang by conquering a 4,000 footer in New Hampshire! It was my first real, big girl hike in New Hampshire and I was pumped! Alicia is the pro-hiker of the two of us, and boy did that show on the way to this summit. I was huffing and puffing and struggling big time. But I made it to the top of Mt. Zealand, crossing parts of the Appalachian Trail, and I was very proud of myself!




I visited Castle Island in Boston, MA for the first time & took a tour of the fort! It was a gorgeous day in early September and I met my friend Mary-Cate and her family friends for a little get together at Castle Island in the shady, grassy picnic areas. Alicia came with me and we ended up taking a tour of the inside of the fort! It was cool to see the real cannons and views from the top of the walls of the fort, as well as to hear our knowledgeable guide giving us all of the Revolutionary War history!





I ended up going home to Connecticut two weekends this month! The first one was filled with events and fun activities. I went to the Hebron Fair with Courtney, Melissa, & Jared! It was so fun, especially since I wasn't able to make it to the Big E this year! I got my fried oreos/Reese's and we escaped from the hoards of teenagers into the beer garden! Teenagers are kind of scary these days, man. Maybe it's only when they move in packs. We forked up the ridiculous money for tickets on the rides and went on the Ferris wheel and this spinning ride that they have at the Big E too that I go on every year! 

That Sunday I had Adriana's 2nd birthday party and the dance studio cookout. The weather was kind of cold/cloudy but I still had fun seeing all of my hometown friends! We drank wine by the fire, talked all things astrology (well, I did...) and toasted vegan marshmallows! 




I went to Salem! The first time I went to Salem was super overwhelming because it was Halloween weekend. But it's spooky even in September! I got my friend a birthday gift from this amazing store called Hauswitch. The gift is a spell (literally a spell, crafted by a coven of witches in Salem!) to clear your home and re-energize it. I love that stuff! We walked around, going into bookstores and apothecaries galore. We stopped by the memorial for those hanged during the Salem Witch Trials and looked up some of the victim's stories. My school is going on a field trip there next month, so I'll be getting even more history on a tour when we go! 




I helped my friend, Alicia, celebrate her 26th birthday! She has had such a tough year - she recently decided to leave her husband and is in the process of getting a divorce. But man, she is one of the strongest ladies I know! She had a gift card to a fancy restaurant in the North End, so SHE took ME out for her birthday hahahah. I got probably the most delicious pesto tortellini I've ever had, and then I treated her to some gelato. The hazlenut flavor was to die for. 




My poor mama got a hip replacement! I went home to Connecticut to help take care of her during a Friday that my dad had to work right after her surgery. It was so nice to be able to come home, hang out with her, and help brighten her day. Especially since she had been soooo nervous about having this surgery. 




This was quite a busy weekend! On Friday night I went to Alaina's house with Shawn and Melissa for her birthday bonfire. Then on Saturday I went with Shawn and Melissa to Lyman Orchards to fully immerse ourselves in fall since this was on the first day of autumn! We got lost in a corn maze, drank cider in the fields, and gorged ourselves on apple crisp!

These crazy friends of mine then convinced me to go to Mohegan Sun to further celebrate Alaina's birthday! Shawn and I ran around town like chickens with our heads cut off trying to find appropriate going out clothes for me since I did NOT bring any! It was stressful but Mohegan was fun! I danced despite my feet literally bleeding in cheap heels and did not have a drop of alcohol because a) I'm poor and b) I was so hungover the previous weekend from going to my coworker's band's show that I was traumatized to drink again. YAY!




This last weekend of the month was another basic fall bitches dream. Alicia and I went to Brooksby Farm in Peabody to get out the city and into an apple orchard. We each picked a peck of apples, got apple cider donuts, apple cider, and different kinds of fudge! I tried some pumpkin fudge and it was actually delicious. 

Wow! When I look at my month like this, taking stock of everything that I actually got to do, it seems like it was quite a month, filled with food, family and friends. 

It's the little moments, man. 

A New Year, A New Season, Another Stab at Blogging


Well, well well.

Here we are again. The world of blogging has once again found me, or maybe I found it. The pull to document my life, goals, and dreams on the internet is strong this season of my life. I re-found my old blog, where I read about the wild changes and challenges that I was going through about two years ago. And it ignited something in me again, to practice my writing, to practice being authentic, and to hold myself accountable.

So here I am, once again, planning to write my little heart out for anyone who find this blog, but wayyyyyy more importantly, my future self. Because hi you, I know you're reading this one day in the future. And if you're wondering, I could be better, but I'm doing okay. Here is a quick recap of the past year, fast forward version, to catch myself up from my last blog that I was continually updating!

I moved. I moved from central Connecticut to right outside of Boston. It's been an interesting year of self-doubt, discovery, and light-bulb realizations about the type of person I am and the environments that I thrive in (and do not thrive in). More changes are on the horizon regarding my living quarters, but I'm not sure how long it's going to be before they come to fruition.

I decided NOT to go to grad school! Applying to grad school, thinking about grad school, and preparing for grad school took up so much of my time and mental energy at the end of 2016. It wasn't until the summer of 2017, right before I was going to begin the Dance/Movement Therapy and LMHC program at Lesley University that I made the difficult decision to defer my acceptance indefinitely. The unbelievable cost of the program was weighing so heavily on me, and I decided that I can find a career path in a similar vein and find a program that will NOT cost me over 100 grand. And honestly I do not regret this!

I fell in love... with my beautiful, perfect, handsome orange tabby cat, Cosmo! I will write about Cosmo a lot - he is the love and light of my life. I adopted him October 3rd, 2017 and his birthday is July 23rd, which makes him a Cancer, which just makes so much sense. I am obsessed with him.

I decided on a new career path, related to my current job. I currently work at a private special education school as a high school counselor and I love my job! I follow a great group of 10th graders throughout the day and assist them with executive functioning, behavior plans, classwork, and just about anything you could think of. Working in a school, in a counseling role, really led me to believe that I would make an amazing school counselor. So this is the graduate program I will be applying for this fall/winter! Woohoo!

This feels like a completely new life from the life I was leading when I wrote my last post on my last blog. And in some ways it is. But that's part of why I want to continue this online journaling journey, so that I can look back and see the progress I've made, the big changes, the little moments, and always how far I've come.
